About the Department

The Department of Botany at Durgapur Women’s College was established in 2017 to provide quality education and research opportunities in the field of botany. It is a relatively new department that has quickly gained recognition for its academic programs. The mission of the department is to promote an understanding of the importance of plants in the ecosystem and their role in sustainable development and to prepare students for careers in Botany, Environmental Science, Agriculture, Biotechnology, and related fields through rigorous academic training and practical experiences. The Department of Botany offers Undergraduate Programs, providing students with a strong foundation in plant biology in relevant areas. Graduate students from this department got admitted to different Colleges and Universities for M.Sc. and different Teacher Training Courses. Some of the past students are now involved in different professions in various fields.

The department is staffed with a team of dedicated and qualified faculty members who are actively engaged in teaching, research, and departmental activities. The first faculty member of the department was Dr. Sunrit Basu Sarbadhikary, who brought expertise in Mycology and Plant Pathology. The faculty members bring diverse expertise in areas such as Plant Physiology and Plant Ecology enriching the academic environment of the department.

The department organizes seminars to engage the students and raise awareness about the food and nutritional value of millets and the importance of botanical research among them. Students of this department actively participate in the annual exhibition, common room competition, and programs of the college and in various cultural programs and many of them have excelled in them. Educational tours to Dooars with Neora Valley National Park and tours of the college campus and adjoining areas are conducted by the faculties of the department. Students are very much benefitted from these departmental tours and can understand the subject in a better way.

Infrastructure:

The department is well equipped with the necessary facilities for the smooth running of the existing courses. Important instruments and lab facilities for the new syllabus are under consideration. A dedicated section in the college library for botany-related books and journals is available. The department is equipped with computer and Internet Facilities which are utilized by the teachers.
