Department of Physics was established in the year 1985 with B.Sc (General) Course under Burdwan University to provide opportunity for perusing career in science to the female students coming from both rural and urban background living in and around the City Durgapur. B.Sc (Honours) course has been started since 2005 under Burdwan University. During 2014-15 academic sessions, the College came under the jurisdiction of Kazi Nazrul University, Asansol. From 2016-17 sessions, B.Sc (Hons & Program) in Physics following CBCS curriculum distributed in six semesters has been started. From 2023-24 session, 4 year B.Sc (Hons./Hons. with Research) and B.Sc. (3 year UG Degree Program) has been started as directed by UGC, Govt. of India and as adopted by Dept. of Higher Education, Govt. of West Bengal to implement National Curriculum and Credit Framework (NCCF). The Department has four well equipped Laboratories having almost all sorts of equipments required to perform practical experiments as prescribed by the University from time to time. Labs are equipped with potentiometers, meter bridges, high precision digital balance, travelling microscopes, Sophisticated power supplies (Aplab made), Frequency generators, Cathode Ray Oscilloscope, Spectrometers, Newton’s ring experiment set up, Fresnel’s biprism experiment, Laser diffraction set up, Four-probe set up, Cathode Ray tube, etc. In addition to the central library, the Departmental Library has a good number of textbooks and reference books. A considerable number of honours graduates from our department opt to study Post Graduate courses and started research career in different universities and institutes. A good number of students are working as teachers in different Colleges, Govt. aided and private schools. Some of them are also working in banking sectors as well as in different Govt. departments. Students of our Department have taken part in different science events organised by various organisations/institutions and performed well. At present the Department has 05 faculty members and 01 Laboratory attendant. The faculty members are actively engaged in teaching as well as research activities. Good number of papers has been published by them in different reputed national and International Journals. Eminent physics teachers and scientists have visited our Department in various occasions and also as resource persons in different seminars organised by our Department during the past few years.

“Myself Sreerupa Chongder. I am pursuing Ph.D in Particle Physics from NIT Rourkela, Odisha. I am a proud student of Durgapur Women’s College. I had studied B.Sc (Physics Hons.) in 2013-2016 and I had spent the most important 3 years in my career there. I am thankful to my professors who always guided me through the course and always have been the constant source of inspiration for me. I got a splendid chance to work in the same college as a Guest Lecturer in the year 2017-2018. I have seen our college is growing with us .I always get back to my professors who always give us life sessions or some important career advice.” SREERUPA CHONGDER (Ph.D Student, NIT Rourkela)“I,
Monika Maji was a student of Durgapur Women’s College of BSC PHYSICS HONS. in the session of 2017-2020.It was an amazing part of my life with many more golden memories cherishing my heart. This college has a well equipped lab set up with various advanced experimental instruments , a well stocked library, sports facilities as well. All the respected faculties were very supportive and encouraging. The cordial behaviour of all the non teaching staff was praiseworthy. I am always grateful to my college and the respected faculties of our department for their wholehearted and sincere efforts for us.” MONIKA MAJI (Ph.D Student, CSIR-CMERI Durgapur)
“The Physics Department at Durgapur Women’s College holds a special place in the hearts of its alumni. From its dedicated faculty to its well-equipped laboratories, the department has been instrumental in shaping the academic journey of many. We, the former students reminisce fondly about the dynamic teaching methods employed by the professors, which made complex concepts understandable and intriguing. The department’s commitment to providing a nurturing learning environment, coupled with its emphasis on practical application through lab work and projects, has been instrumental in preparing students for both further studies and real-world challenges. Moreover, the sense of camaraderie among students within the department fostered a collaborative learning environment, where discussions were not just encouraged but celebrated. Many alumni attribute their passion for physics and their success in their careers to the strong foundation laid by the department. Overall, the Physics Department at Durgapur Women’s College is more than just an academic institution; it’s a community where curiosity is nurtured, knowledge is shared, and lifelong bonds are formed.” AKANKSHA MUKHERJEE (Pursuing Ph.D, Jadavpur University)
“This is Pompa Gorai. I have completed my graduation in General Science stream from Durgapur Women’s College in 2014. The college has taught me many things, especially the physics department. It inspired me so much that at a point I have made my mind up to study with optical fibre. But destiny has some other plan for me I guess. After completing college I started to study for competitive exams and after a time got appointed in the State Excise Department. At present I am the Sub Inspector of Excise. I am hoping to go high in future with all these experiences” PAMPA GORAI (Presently working in Excise Department, Govt. of West Bengal)
“Physics is the science that studies the structure of matter and the interactions between the fundamental constituents of the observable universe. In the broadest sense, physics is concerned with all aspects of nature on both the macroscopic and sub microscopic levels. The physics department at our college provided me with a strong foundation in the principles and applications of physics. The professors were knowledgeable and passionate about the subject, making the classes engaging and informative. The department also offered plenty of opportunities for hands-on experiments and seminars, allowing me to apply what I learned in the classroom. The resources and facilities available were top-notch, providing a conducive environment for learning and exploration. Overall, my experience in the physics department was invaluable and prepared me well for my future endeavours in the field. I highly recommend the department to anyone interested in pursuing a career in physics.” RUCHISMITA DEB (Pursuing M.Sc)
“The Physics Department has well equipped laboratories with very helpful teachers who teach students with a great deal of reverence for the subject. Along with studies, they will be ready to help you out with valuable advice regarding life situations and will readily encourage everyone to have an active participation in extra co- curricular activities. I had a greatly profound journey with them, full of cherished memories” SUBHOSHREE MUKHERJEE (Pursuing MBA, Calcutta University)
“The Physics department at Durgapur Women’s College is quite good & it has excellent lab facilities. The department has enough number of apparatus required for respective experiments & every student gets a fair chance to have her hands on experience. The faculties there are too good & have a vast experience. Some faculties are very supportive & helpful too. Moreover, the department participates in science exhibitions & other cultural programs of the college. Opting for Bachelors in the Physics department of DWC is a rational option to consider for someone who wants to have a career in R&D in the Physics discipline” ASMITA BHATTACHARJEE (Pursuing M.Sc)
