About the Department

Established in 2017, the Department of Zoology, Durgapur Women’s College, has carved a niche for itself in the realm of biological sciences. Driven by a dedicated team of faculty members and a commitment to academic excellence, the department fosters a vibrant learning environment where students delve into the captivating world of animal science. The department’s journey began with a team of passionate individuals Dr. Ramansu Goswami and Dr. Atrayee Dey under the inspiration of the then Principal Prof. Madhumita Jajodia who laid the foundation for a rigorous and comprehensive Zoology program. Their unwavering dedication and pioneering spirit paved the way for the department’s steady growth and success. In 2018, Dr. Shubhranil Brahma, joined the ranks, further enriching the academic tapestry. Together, the faculty meticulously crafted a curriculum that balanced theory with practical learning, ensuring a well-rounded education. As Dr. Dey and Dr. Brahma moved on to pursue their new assignments, the department welcomed new members who brought their unique expertise to the table. In December 2022, Dr. Saubhik Mitra, who pursued his research on Chemical ecology of plant-insect interactions, joined the ranks as Invited Lecturer and in January 2023 Ms. Shiuli Chakraborty, M.Sc. specialized in Entomology, added her fresh perspective and dynamic energy to the team as another Invited Lecturer. Under the supervision of Dr. Ramansu Goswami, Head of the Department, whose research delves into Microbial Pathogenesis, Molecular Biology and Clinical Cytogenetics of viral infections and immune responses, the department consistently strives for excellence, fostering a culture of intellectual inquiry and scientific exploration. The department offers a comprehensive Bachelor of Science program in Zoology (Honours) under the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS-LOCF). Additionally, in line with the National Education Policy 2023, the department now proudly offers Zoology as a Major and Minor option, empowering students to tailor their academic journeys to their specific interests and career aspirations. Beyond the classroom, the department fosters holistic learning through field trips, excursions, institutional visits, guest lectures, and student-led seminars. It provides students with opportunities to engage with the natural world firsthand, apply theoretical concepts in practical settings, and develop critical thinking and communication skills. The department’s success speaks volumes. Since its inception, it boasts a remarkable track record of academic achievement:
Furthermore, many alumni have joined diverse professional courses, demonstrating the department’s strong foundation and versatility. As the department marches forward, its faculty remains dedicated to continuous improvement. The Department of Zoology stands as a testament to dedication, collaboration, and a shared passion for the wonders of the animal kingdom. It is a place where curiosity finds fertile ground, knowledge blossoms, and future zoologists are equipped with the tools and skills to not only understand the secrets of life but also become responsible stewards of our planet’s rich biodiversity.
