About the Department

The Department of English was established in 1980 conducting General Courses in English. Since 1995, it has been offering Honours Courses. In accordance with NEP 2020 and the Kazi Nazrul University guideline, it introduced Major/Minor in English Courses in 2023. Besides regular or Core Courses covering all aspects of literary studies, the Department thrives in interdisciplinary education by introducing Elective Courses on films, sociology and law. One of the mainstays of the Department has been strict schedule of classes that enhance utmost potential of the learner. Concurrently, it conducts remedial classes and hands-on tutorials on competitive examinations. Besides, it occasionally organises seminars and workshops inviting external speakers.
Apart from curricular activities, the Department strives to engage students in many other ways. It has a Book Club, Movie Club, Debate Club and an E-Magazine that aim at holistic development of its students. Learners who graduate from the department have a plethora of opportunities in terms of higher studies as well as employment as the teachers conduct career counselling/mentoring sessions with the outgoing students. A considerable number of former students are now employed in banks, MNCs (Cognizant, TCS, Google etc), schools, colleges and universities while many are pursuing higher studies in reputed universities across India (Visva-Bharati, Banaras Hindu University, University of Calcutta, University of Burdwan etc).
